Components: Heat Exchangers & Inlet Filters
Heat exchangers and inlet filters are key components in process gas management for industrial additive manufacturing, including LPBF systems. They help control protective gas flows, maintain stable process conditions and support the reliable operation of closed-loop process gas circuits. Temperature control, gas quality and filtration all have a direct impact on process stability, system availability and long-term operational safety.
Why are heat exchangers and inlet filters important in the LPBF process?
During the LPBF process, protective gas is continuously circulated through the build chamber. As it flows, it carries particles, process by-products and thermal energy away from the build area.
An effective process gas circuit therefore requires more than blowers and filtration alone. It also depends on components that regulate temperature and condition the process gas.
Tasks of a Heat Exchanger
- Cooling the process gas
- Stabilising the gas temperature
- Supporting consistent process conditions
- Reducing thermal loads within the gas circuit
Tasks of an Inlet Filter
- Protecting downstream components
- Removing unwanted particles
- Improving gas quality
- Supporting reliable system operation
RV 1.17 Heat Exchanger
Designed to achieve the optimum gas temperature for stable process conditions.
The RV 1.17 heat exchanger has been developed specifically for industrial additive manufacturing applications. With efficient heat transfer and low pressure losses, it supports precise temperature control within closed-loop protective gas circuits.

Typical applications
The RV 1.17 heat exchanger is commonly used in:
- LPBF systems with argon recirculation
- LPBF systems with nitrogen recirculation
- Multi-laser systems
- OEM machine platforms
Why is gas temperature important?
The temperature of the process gas has a direct impact on the stability of the entire protective gas circuit. As gas temperatures rise, the performance of downstream components can be affected, leading to fluctuations in process conditions. A suitable heat exchanger helps maintain controlled gas temperatures and supports stable operating conditions.
